We are excited to be working alongside Avcon Projects Australasia and Risk Response Resources to form a combined Training, Safety, Environment and Emergency Response Hub in Port Kembla.
Our Hub partners held an open day to showcase their Fire and Vertical Rescue training to a group of professionals from the Illawarra as part of an opening day to demonstrate their capabilities.

Using your vessel(s) for the practical aspects of the course, your crews get real experience with their equipment, procedures, and a valuable exposure when the time calls.
United Salvage, in consultation with industry, has utilised its experiences in emergency response situations to develop a two-day Lloyd’s Register accredited course in Marine Emergency Towage. Including both theoretical and practical elements, the course provides towage vessel operators and their crews with a realistic opportunity to engage with salvage industry expects whom have worked on some of the most complex marine emergency response situations experienced both regionally and globally.
A tailorable course, it provides relevant inputs into your vessel and emergency towage set up. Using your vessel(s) for the practical aspects of the course, your crews get real experience with their equipment, procedures, and a valuable exposure when the time calls.
During the course, attendees will get an insight into:
- Understanding the basic concepts of marine salvage and have an awareness of emergency towage capabilities.
- Identification of equipment suitable for a variety of emergency towage solutions.
- Preparation of both the towage vessel and casualty for an emergency towage connection.
- Connection of both a ‘dead-ship’ and powered casualty emergency towage situations.
- Emergency towage equipment storage and maintenance.
All whilst performing tasks in a SAFE and SEAMANSHIP like manner. At the completion of the course, competent attendees will be issued with a certificate of competency and be better prepared for when your organisation is faced with engagement in emergency towage situations.

Our projects include the management of and preparation of vessels for green recycling and disposal.
We are well experienced in providing decommissioning services and support in Australasia. We have undertaken large scale projects in port and offshore that include;
- Removal of fire damaged jack up rig from oilfield
- Fire damaged bulk carriers within port limits.

It starts with small-arms ammunition and gold ingots...
United Salvage history dates back to prior to the Second World War when a united syndicate was formed to recover gold bullion from the sunken vessel “RMS Niagara” that struck a mine off New Zealand on 13-14 June 1938. Capt John Williams formed the syndicate and assembled the salvage team to recover the bullion to support the impending war efforts of the Empire.
United Salvage evolved throughout the years following the Second World War to be owned by the Australian companies Howard Smith’s and adds the marine. Following the takeover of Howard Smith’s by Adsteam Marine, Adsteam was then taken over by SVITZER, part of the AP Moller Maersk group. United Salvage ceased operating in 2007 and was reactivated in 2020.
